16 Killed In Illegal Coal Mine Explosion In Meghalaya
Shillong, 5 Feb : At least 16 labourers have been killed and several others are feared trapped after a powerful explosion ripped through an allegedly illegal rat-hole coal mine in the East Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya on Thursday.
The blast occurred earlier in the day in the Thangsku area, where authorities have so far recovered 16 bodies. Several workers are believed to still be trapped underground, and rescue teams are continuing search and rescue operations.
One injured person was rescued from the site and shifted to a hospital in Shillong for treatment. Police suspect that the coal mine was operating illegally and have ordered an inquiry to determine the exact cause of the explosion.
Rat-hole mining, a method involving narrow horizontal tunnels, has been banned by the National Green Tribunal due to serious environmental damage and safety risks. However, such illegal mining activities are reported to be continuing in parts of Meghalaya.
