Gangtok, May 29 (IPR): The Governor of Sikkim Mr Om Prakash Mathur, on behalf of Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi, alongside Chief Minister Mr Prem Singh Tamang, Lok Sabha MP Dr Indra Hang Subba, and Rajya Sabha MP Mr DT Lepcha, today unveiled a ₹50 silver coin alongside a specially issued commemorative postage stamp during a formal public ceremony at Paljor Stadium, Gangtok, to mark the Golden Jubilee of Sikkim’s accession to the Indian Union.
The occasion, attended by dignitaries, government officials, and members of the public, formed the centrepiece of the state’s 50th Statehood Anniversary celebrations, reflecting on Sikkim’s five-decade journey of democratic integration, cultural pride, and socio-economic development.
Taking centre stage during the ceremony was the release of a commemorative postage stamp by India Post, capturing the essence of Sikkim’s natural grandeur, cultural richness, and environmental consciousness. The stamp pays homage to the state’s scenic landscapes, vibrant traditions, and its commitment to sustainable development. It stands as a philatelic celebration of Sikkim’s progress and its unique place within India’s cultural and ecological framework.
Designed with intricate detail, the stamp features elements symbolising Sikkim’s majestic mountains, pristine environment, and the diversity of its people, encapsulating the spirit of a state that has harmoniously blended tradition with modernity.
Adding to the occasion’s significance, a ₹50 commemorative coin, minted in pure silver (99.9%), weighing 40 grams, and measuring 44 mm in diameter with 200 serrations. Minted by the India Government Mint, Kolkata, the coin has been issued as a non-circulating legal tender and will be available to collectors through the Kolkata Mint.
The Obverse Design features the Lion Capital of Ashoka at the centre with the inscription “सत्यमेव जयते” below, flanked by “भारत” in Devanagari on the left and “INDIA” in English on the right. The Rupee symbol (₹) and the denominational value 50 are displayed below the Lion Capital.
The Reverse Design bears the official logo of the 50 Years of Statehood – Sikkim at the centre. The inscription “राज्यत्व के 50 गौरवशाली वर्ष - सिक्किम” is displayed on the upper periphery in Devanagari script and “50 Glorious Years of Statehood – Sikkim” on the lower periphery in English. The years “1975 – 2025” are engraved below the logo.
The coin symbolises Sikkim’s transformation from a Himalayan kingdom to a progressive Indian state rooted in democracy, harmony, and development.
The issuance of both the coin and the stamp stands as a tribute to Sikkim’s inspiring narrative of integration, resilience, and progress. It also reflects the Government of India’s recognition of the state’s contributions to the nation’s unity, culture, and environmental ethos.
As Sikkim enters its next chapter, the commemorative stamp and coin serve as lasting symbols of a golden legacy and a vision for an even brighter future.
