Assam’s Binita Chetry Makes History as Second Runner-Up on Britain’s Got Talent

Nine-year-old Binita Chetry from the remote village of Talbalijan in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district has carved her name in history by finishing as the second runner-up on the globally acclaimed talent show Britain’s Got Talent (BGT). She is believed to be the first Indian ever to reach the grand finale of the competition.

Binita's impressive journey culminated in the season finale held on Saturday night, where British magician Harry Moulding was crowned the winner, and LED dance group 'The Blackouts' took second place. Despite tough competition, Binita’s electrifying performances won the hearts of the audience and judges alike, making her one of the most celebrated contestants of the season.

Following her victory, Binita shared a heartfelt video on BGT’s official social media pages, thanking her supporters in the UK and across Asia. She expressed deep gratitude to fans from India, Nepal, Bhutan, and other nations who voted and encouraged her throughout the competition.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma lauded her incredible achievement, calling it a proud moment for the state. Binita responded warmly to his support and expressed her wish to meet him in person to offer her thanks.

Support for Binita’s journey came from multiple fronts. Tuliram Ronghang, Chief Executive Member of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, contributed Rs 5 lakh to aid her preparation for the finale. Additionally, Assam Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker and local MLA Numal Momin also extended his support.

Her father, Amar Chetry, who runs a small broiler chicken farm and is known for his community involvement, spotted her talent early. He ensured she received professional dance training first in Guwahati and later in Jaipur, where she was mentored by her aunt Amrita Devi and choreographer Hardik Rawat.

According to Nanda Kirati Dewan, coordinator of the Binita Chetry Support Group, her performances featured complex, high-energy moves, including backflips and other acrobatic routines that consistently impressed viewers and the jury throughout her time on the show.

Binita's success story stands as a powerful symbol of talent, perseverance, and the global recognition of Indian youth on international platforms.
