Bengaluru Man Sends ₹50 Lakh Legal Notice to BBMP Over Dangerous Roads, Cites Severe Health Impact
Bengaluru, 20 May – A resident of Bengaluru has issued a legal notice to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), demanding ₹50 lakh in compensation for physical injuries and mental suffering allegedly caused by the city’s hazardous and neglected roads. The complainant, 43-year-old Dhivya Kiran from Richmond Town, blames the civic authority for failing to provide safe road infrastructure, despite his status as a law-abiding, tax-paying citizen.
According to the notice, the condition of the roads has aggravated Kiran’s spinal and neck issues, making daily travel a painful ordeal. He claims to have sought treatment from five orthopedic specialists and made four emergency hospital visits, undergoing multiple medical procedures due to the physical strain of commuting on the city's broken roads.
Kiran, represented by Advocate K.V. Laveen, stated in the legal notice dated May 14 that the ongoing distress has significantly affected his quality of life. “My client has experienced severe pain, sleepless nights, emotional breakdowns, and anxiety episodes—all rooted in his worsening health caused by treacherous road conditions,” said Laveen.
The notice highlights that Mr. Kiran can no longer use two-wheelers or autorickshaws, and even cab rides have become difficult, limiting his independence and impacting his personal and professional obligations.
He holds BBMP responsible for “gross negligence and dereliction of public duty,” which he claims has directly resulted in his physical suffering, emotional distress, and financial burden due to recurring medical expenses. In addition to the ₹50 lakh compensation, Kiran has also demanded ₹10,000 to cover the legal notice charges.
The legal notice demands a response and resolution within 15 days, failing which Mr. Kiran has threatened to initiate formal legal proceedings. He also expressed his willingness to escalate the matter through a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) if necessary.
“There are potholes and craters across the city, and every journey feels like a risk,” Mr. Kiran told media. “I’ve raised complaints in the past, but nothing changed. Why should citizens have to suffer for basic infrastructure failures?”
While BBMP has yet to officially respond, the case has reignited public discourse on the deteriorating state of roads in Bengaluru. Recent heavy rainfall has only worsened conditions, leading to waterlogged streets and citizens evacuating flooded homes with inflatable boats.
