Bihar Government Withdraws All FIRs Against NEET Protesters, Orders Immediate Release of Detained Demonstrators
New Delhi, July 28 : The Bihar government has announced a complete rollback of legal action against protesters who took part in agitations over irregularities in the NEET-UG paper leak case, ordering the withdrawal of all First Information Reports and the immediate release of everyone arrested or detained during the demonstrations.
In a late-night notification issued Monday, the state government said the legal process for withdrawing all existing FIRs, criminal complaints, and show-cause notices filed against individuals for their participation in the protests would be initiated immediately. The order covers all such cases registered before 6 PM on July 26, 2026.
According to the notification, all persons arrested or detained in connection with these cases before that cutoff will be released without delay. The government further clarified that no direct or indirect action will be taken against any of the protesters in the future in connection with their participation in the agitation.
The decision follows weeks of unrest across Bihar, with protesters demanding accountability over alleged irregularities in the NEET examination process. The demonstrations had seen clashes between police and protesters in several districts, including Patna, Siwan, and Chapra, with reports of vandalism and stone-pelting during a statewide shutdown. Protesters had also called for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the handling of the paper leak issue.
Among those arrested during the protests was RJD leader Tej Pratap Yadav, who was sent to judicial custody following his detention in Patna in connection with the agitation.
The Bihar government's move to withdraw all cases and release detainees marks a significant de-escalation of the standoff between the administration and protest groups, which had intensified over recent weeks.
