Cancer Drugs Get Cheaper in India as NPPA Cuts Prices by Up to ₹72,921

Cancer medicines in India are set to become more affordable following a major price revision by the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA). The authority has revised the maximum retail prices (MRPs) of 543 formulations covering 137 cancer drugs that previously had no government-fixed price ceiling.

Among the affected medicines, Thiotepa, a chemotherapy drug used in cancer treatment, recorded the largest absolute price reduction of ₹72,921.53. Meanwhile, Palbociclib, commonly prescribed for certain types of breast cancer, witnessed the steepest percentage reduction, with its price falling by 93.3%.

The revised pricing is expected to provide substantial financial relief to cancer patients and their families, particularly those undergoing prolonged and expensive treatments. Estimated annual savings from the initiative could range between ₹2,500 crore and ₹3,500 crore.

The move aims to improve access to essential cancer medicines while reducing the financial burden associated with cancer treatment across India. The actual savings for individual patients will depend on the medicines prescribed and their revised retail prices.
