Strict directive from Chief Secretary: Government files, documents, and important records must be kept safe

As political change looms in Bengal, concerns over corruption during the 15-year rule of Mamata Banerjee have intensified. In this context, West Bengal Chief Secretary Dushyant Nariala issued a strict directive on May 4, 2026, to all departmental secretaries and heads of offices.

The order clearly states that, in view of the 2026 Assembly election results, no government file, document, or important paper should be destroyed or removed from offices. This step has been taken to ensure transparency and safeguard official records during a possible transition of power.

Key Highlights of the Order:

Protection of Documents:
No files or documents should be moved from the state secretariat Nabanna or any other government office.

Personal Responsibility:
If any file goes missing or is damaged, the concerned departmental secretary and office head will be held personally responsible.

Ban on Unauthorized Copies:
Unauthorized scanning or photocopying of important documents has been strictly prohibited.

Security Measures:
Instructions have been given to ensure the safety of files under the supervision of central forces.

This strict directive comes at a time when election trends indicated a strong position for the Bharatiya Janata Party, raising concerns about possible tampering with old records.

The order makes it clear that all department heads are now under increased pressure—any missing or destroyed document will lead to official accountability.

The directive also gains importance as Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and other BJP leaders had stated during the election campaign that if their government comes to power, all alleged scams linked to the All India Trinamool Congress will be investigated.

Such orders are often issued because, in many cases, when governments change in states, important documents are either destroyed or go missing. To prevent such situations, this directive has been enforced in advance.
