EC Orders Full Re-Vote in Bengal’s Falta After Major Poll Irregularities
Kolkata, May 3: In a rare and sweeping move, the Election Commission has cancelled the earlier voting in West Bengal’s Falta Assembly constituency and directed fresh polling across all 285 booths. The re-election will take place on May 21, with counting scheduled for May 24.
The decision follows reports of serious irregularities during the April 29 polling, raising concerns about the credibility of the electoral process in the constituency. Officials said the scale of violations was significant enough to compromise the fairness of the vote, prompting the need for a complete re-poll.
Preliminary findings indicated issues at several polling stations, including suspected tampering with voting machines and disruptions during the voting process. These incidents led authorities to conclude that the integrity of the election had been affected, making it difficult to determine a genuine outcome.
As a result, the earlier voting in Falta now stands nullified. Unlike other constituencies where counting will proceed as planned, Falta’s result will only be declared after the fresh polling later this month.
The Election Commission has assured that the re-poll will be conducted under strict monitoring, with enhanced security measures to ensure a free and fair election. The development has drawn significant political attention, with parties closely watching the situation ahead of the revised polling date.
This rare decision highlights the commission’s commitment to maintaining electoral integrity, even if it requires cancelling and re-conducting voting across an entire constituency.
