"Every Life Is Precious": Delhi HC Puts Sonam Wangchuk Under Daily Medical Watch As Fast Hits Day 19
New Delhi, July 16: With Sonam Wangchuk's hunger strike entering its nineteenth day, the Delhi High Court on Thursday ordered daily medical check-ups for the activist by government doctors, observing that "every life is precious."
A Division Bench of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia disposed of a Public Interest Litigation after the Centre assured the court that timely medical aid would be provided to protect the activist's life. The bench directed that if doctors' daily reports call for it, authorities must intervene with medication immediately.
The PIL, filed by advocate Rakesh Kumar Saini, had flagged Wangchuk's sharp weight loss and unstable blood sugar levels at the Jantar Mantar protest site, and sought his shifting to a government hospital for medical feeding to prevent organ damage.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the court the government had no objection, adding that officials were already monitoring Wangchuk's vitals on-site and would act instantly on any adverse development.
The 59-year-old educationist has been fasting since June 28 in support of the Cockroach Janta Party's student movement demanding accountability over alleged NEET-UG irregularities and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. He has reportedly lost over 8 kg, drawing appeals from Congress MP Shashi Tharoor and several film personalities urging him to end the fast. Protesters plan to march to Parliament on July 20.
