Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang inaugurated newly installed floodlights at the Sikkim Cricket Ground in Mining, Rangpo on Sunday evening, marking a major milestone in the advancement of sports infrastructure in the state.
Terming the development as a “new chapter” for cricket in Sikkim, the Chief Minister expressed optimism that the upgrade would pave the way for evening matches and encourage broader participation in the sport. He extended his congratulations to the Sikkim Cricket Association (SICA) for its dedicated efforts in elevating the standard of cricket facilities in the state.
“This is a significant step towards energizing our young athletes and fostering a vibrant cricketing culture across Sikkim,” he said.
The inauguration ceremony was followed by a spirited exhibition match between CS XI and President XI, attended by several dignitaries, including Hon’ble Chief Justice of the Sikkim High Court Justice Biswanath Somadder, Cabinet Ministers, and Members of the Legislative Assembly. President XI emerged victorious in the friendly encounter, which was widely appreciated for its display of sportsmanship and unity.
Adding to the evening’s highlights, the trophy for the forthcoming Inter-Departmental Cricket Tournament was officially unveiled, setting the stage for a much-anticipated competitive event that aims to further promote inter-departmental camaraderie through sports.
CM Tamang emphasized that such initiatives go beyond sport, helping to foster community bonds and a healthy lifestyle. “I look forward to seeing cricket in Sikkim reach new heights,” he added.
