Former Kalimpong MLA Denied Entry To Sikkim For Meeting PM With Merger aka Unification Memorandum

Rangpo, May 29 : Former Kalimpong MLA Harka Bahadur Chettri was denied entry into Sikkim at the Rangpo Checkpost on Wednesday morning, as part of a coordinated security response by the Sikkim and West Bengal police. The move came amid intelligence alerts surrounding a proposed political rally.

As per a notification from the Superintendent of Police, DIB Kalimpong, Chettri had earlier revealed his plan during a press briefing to lead a rally from Andheri to Rangpo on May 29. He, along with a group of supporters, aimed to march to Gangtok to submit a memorandum advocating the unification of Sikkim and Darjeeling.

The planned demonstration raised security concerns, particularly as Prime Minister Narendra Modi was visiting Sikkim the same day to mark the golden jubilee of the state’s accession to the Indian Union. Intelligence inputs also indicated the possible involvement of various political and non-political groups in the rally, further heightening the alert level.

Given the sensitive timing and the significant security arrangements in place for the Prime Minister’s visit, authorities decided to restrict the group’s entry as a preventive measure. The Sikkim Police, acting on strategic coordination with West Bengal Police, ensured that no breach of peace occurred at the Rangpo border checkpoint.

Officials clarified that the step was purely precautionary and taken in the interest of maintaining public order during a high-profile state event. No untoward incident was reported during the intervention.
