India Imposes Port Restrictions on Select Imports from Bangladesh

New Delhi, 18 May – In a strategic trade move, India has announced new port restrictions on specific categories of imports originating from Bangladesh, including processed food items and readymade garments. The decision, effective immediately, was communicated through an official notification issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) under the Ministry of Commerce.

The notification clearly outlines that imports of selected goods from Bangladesh will now be permitted only through designated ports. The aim is to streamline and regulate the inflow of these products into the Indian market.

However, the government clarified that this directive will not impact goods from Bangladesh that are merely transiting through India en route to third countries like Nepal and Bhutan. Such transit shipments will continue to be exempt from the newly imposed port-specific limitations.

This measure marks a significant development in India’s trade management approach with its eastern neighbor and is expected to influence bilateral commercial logistics and supply chains.
