Darjeeling MP Raju Bista Seeks Free and Fair Probe into Murder of Kalyan Rai in Gangtok
Darjeeling/Gangtok, July 24: Darjeeling MP Raju Bista has written to Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang (Golay), urging a thorough, free, and impartial investigation into the recent murder of Kalyan Rai, a 36-year-old resident of Katwali Bazar, Lebong in Darjeeling. The tragic incident took place near Krishi Bhawan in Tadong, Gangtok, on the night of July 22.
In his letter, Bista expressed deep sorrow and concern over the brutal killing, which has shocked the region and left the community in grief. According to the MP, the Gangtok Sadar Police Station has registered the case under FIR No. 100/2025, and a 76-year-old accused has been charged under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
Highlighting media reports, Bista noted that the victim sustained 10 to 11 stab wounds on the chest, hands, and neck, which, despite the accused's claims of self-defence, raise “serious questions” about the circumstances of the incident.
Calling for justice, Bista made two key demands to the Sikkim Government:
1. A Free and Fair Investigation: He urged the state to ensure the probe is conducted transparently and impartially, stating that only a swift and unbiased investigation could restore public trust and deliver justice to the victim and his family.
2. Compensation for the Victim’s Family: The MP emphasized that Rai came from an economically marginalised background and was the primary breadwinner for his family. He requested financial assistance from the government to help the bereaved family cope with the immediate financial distress caused by the tragedy.
“I humbly request your urgent attention to this matter and look forward to your kind intervention,” the letter concludes, with Bista expressing faith in the Chief Minister’s leadership and commitment to justice.
The incident has sparked outrage among the Darjeeling community, with calls growing louder for transparency and accountability in the investigation.
