Masked Assault on Ashish Rai Under Investigation by Gangtok Police

Gangtok District Police is actively probing the violent assault on Mr. Ashish Rai, which occurred on the morning of May 5 outside the residence of Mr. Dorjee Bhutia at Manaydara, Rongyek. Mr. Rai, who lives in a rented room at the location, was reportedly attacked by three masked individuals while washing his vehicle.

According to police sources, the attackers used hammers and pepper spray in the assault. A case has been registered under Sadar PS FIR No. 70/2025 under Sections 126(2), 115(2), 117(2), 118(2), and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Police immediately reached the site following the incident and examined several local witnesses. Eyewitness accounts suggest that 5 to 7 masked individuals were seen in the area, and a suspicious vehicle with covered number plates was also spotted nearby.

Statements were recorded from three individuals, including a local food vendor who had reportedly served breakfast to the suspects shortly before the attack.

Mr. Rai, currently undergoing treatment at New STNM Hospital, gave a statement but was unable to identify or name any suspects. He has not accused anyone in connection with the assault.

CCTV footage from nearby locations was reviewed; however, most cameras were either non-functional, dummy units, or had already overwritten the relevant data.

During the investigation, police recovered a blue hammer and a black pepper spray canister believed to have been used in the attack. A blood-stained green sweatshirt was also found in the victim’s rented room.

Authorities have stated that all technical leads are being pursued, and intensive efforts are underway to trace and apprehend those responsible.

Gangtok Police has assured the public that every possible measure is being taken to ensure justice is served.
