Nana Patekar Had Kept 12 Maunds of Dry Wood Ready for His Own Funeral Pyre, With One Last Condition

Mumbai, October 09 : Veteran actor Nana Patekar, who passed away on Thursday, 8 October 2026, at the age of 75 after a cardiac arrest at his home in Dona Paula, Goa, had spoken about his own death three years ago with rare calm and humour.

In a September 2023 interview with Aaj Tak, he revealed that he had already kept aside 12 maunds of dry wood, nearly half a tonne, for his own cremation. He described it as his final property, the only thing he would take with him.

He had one condition: no wet wood. Wet wood makes smoke, smoke makes eyes water, and he joked that he did not want anyone to mistake those tears for grief over him.

The old clip is now going viral, with fans calling it the truest picture of the man: blunt, simple and unafraid.
A National Award winner, Padma Shri recipient and co-founder of Naam Foundation, Nana lived by his own rules and had clearly planned to leave by them too.
Om Shanti.
