Nepal Allows Indians and Nepali Citizens to Carry New Indian ₹200 and ₹500 Notes Up to ₹25,000
Kathmandu, July 26: Nepal has eased its currency regulations by allowing Indian and Nepali citizens to carry Indian currency notes of ₹200 and ₹500 denominations, issued on or after November 9, 2016, while entering or leaving the country.
According to a notice issued by the Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), individuals may carry these Indian currency notes up to a maximum value of ₹25,000 per person, subject to the prevailing regulations. The move effectively ends the restriction imposed after India's 2016 demonetisation, under which only Indian currency notes of denominations up to ₹100 were permitted despite the ₹25,000 overall limit.
The revised rule is expected to facilitate travel, trade, and business activities between India and Nepal, which share close economic and people-to-people ties as well as an open border.
However, the NRB clarified that Indian ₹500 and ₹1,000 notes issued before November 9, 2016, remain prohibited in Nepal and cannot be brought into or taken out of the country.
