Prof. Bhaskar Chakraborty from the Department of Chemistry, Sikkim Government College, Tadong, Gangtok, which is an extension center of Sikkim University, has been selected as an invited speaker at the 5th World Chemistry Congress. The event will be held at the University of Rome La Sapienza in Italy from June 2 to 5, 2025. He will present his recent research published in reputed journals such as Elsevier, RSC, and Taylor & Francis.
Before this event, Prof. Chakraborty will also present his research at ETH Zurich, Switzerland, on May 30, 2025. His work is focused on nitrone cycloaddition reactions and their applications through eco-friendly methods. This domain of research was first introduced at ETH Zurich in 1972 by Late Prof. A. Eschenmoser, whose first research scholar was Late Prof. Tapan Dasgupta, a teacher of Prof. Chakraborty at North Bengal University.
Adding to the pride, Prof. Chakraborty's elder son, Prayash Chakraborty, who is currently in his second year of MBBS at JIMSH, Kolkata, has also been selected for a poster presentation under the Medicinal Chemistry section of the same chemistry congress. This will mark a rare occasion where both father and son will present their academic work at the same international conference. It is likely the first such instance for the state of Sikkim.
The conference organizers have also invited Prof. Chakraborty's wife, Mrs. Malini Chakraborty, to attend the event in Rome as an accompanying person. His international travel is being sponsored by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), New Delhi.
Prof. Chakraborty is known for his weekly contributions on current and scientific affairs in the Sikkim Express. He is a senior professor of chemistry, actively involved in research, and has guided seven Ph.D. scholars. He has over 80 research publications in peer-reviewed and UGC-recognized national and international journals.
This achievement is a matter of great pride for the institution, the state of Sikkim, and Prof. Chakraborty's hometown of Siliguri. He shared that he looks forward to discussing his experiences from both conferences with postgraduate and research students in Sikkim and emphasized the importance of pursuing research in organic chemistry for the benefit of society.
