RBI Cracks Down, Dark Patterns Banned in Banks, A Major Win for Customer Trust by 2026

New Delhi, 25 Feb : The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has taken a significant step to protect customers in digital banking by addressing deceptive design tricks known as "dark patterns."

In a recent draft guideline called the Responsible Business Conduct Amendment Directions, 2026, the RBI has ordered all commercial banks to completely remove these manipulative elements from their apps and websites by July 2026. This decision follows numerous consumer complaints and a large survey by LocalCircles, which found that many users experience misleading tactics while using online banking services.

Dark patterns are sneaky user interface designs that lead people into making unintended choices, usually to benefit the company. Common examples in banking include drip pricing, which gradually reveals hidden fees and affects 64% of surveyed users, basket sneaking, which adds unwanted items or charges to transactions and impacts 57%, forced actions that require unnecessary steps or purchases, and nagging with persistent pop-ups or prompts. On average, Indian banks have been using four to seven of these tactics.

The RBI's rules go further by banning forced bundling of products, like tying insurance to loans, requiring clear, separate consent for every service or third-party offering, and prohibiting the sale of unsuitable products even if consent appears given. This addresses ongoing issues with mis-selling, hidden charges, and unwanted subscriptions that have damaged trust in the sector.

Banks must redesign their digital platforms for better transparency, retrain their teams, and establish stronger checks to ensure compliance. While this might impact revenue from sources like bancassurance fees, which are a major income source, it promises a fairer experience for users and aligns with global efforts to promote ethical digital practices.

This is seen as a significant win for consumers, shifting the focus from buyer beware to making banks more accountable and customer-friendly in India’s rapidly growing digital finance landscape.
