Sikkim Police Crack Down on LPG Hoarding and Overcharging; DGP Orders Immediate Action
Gangtok, March 14 : Director General of Police Akshay Sachdeva has instructed all district police units across Sikkim to take swift and strict action against complaints related to the hoarding of LPG cylinders, artificial shortage, overcharging by porters, and the illegal diversion of domestic gas cylinders to hotels and restaurants.
In an official communication sent to Superintendents of Police (SPs), Sub-Divisional Police Officers (SDPOs), and Station House Officers (SHOs), the DGP noted that authorities have been receiving numerous complaints from different parts of the state regarding irregularities in the distribution of LPG cylinders.
Sachdeva clarified that there is no real shortage of LPG in the state. According to him, certain individuals are allegedly trying to create an artificial scarcity, which could mislead the public and damage the government’s reputation.
To address the issue, the DGP has directed police officials at every level to immediately begin field inspections and closely monitor the distribution process. Police teams have been asked to conduct checking drives and take strict legal action against those found hoarding cylinders, diverting domestic LPG for commercial use, or charging customers beyond the prescribed rates.
Additionally, district Superintendents of Police have been advised to use local media platforms to issue clear warnings to anyone attempting to manipulate LPG supplies or engage in unfair practices.
The directive calls for immediate implementation. Deputy Inspectors General (DIGs) along with the Inspector General (Law & Order) have been tasked with supervising and ensuring strict enforcement of these instructions across the state.
