Sister's Tip Leads to Arrest of Brother, All Five Accused in Durgapur Gang Rape Now in Custody

The main suspect in the horrific gang-rape of a medical student in Durgapur was apprehended early Monday, thanks to a courageous tip-off from his own sister.

Rozina Sk helped police track down and arrest her absconding elder brother, Safiq Sk. She accompanied a police team to a designated meeting spot below the Andal bridge in Durgapur where Safiq was rounded up. Rozina stated that she wanted her brother to face the law for his alleged crime.

All Five Suspects Arrested

The arrest of Safiq Sk and another accused, Sk Nasiruddin, on Monday morning means that all five individuals implicated in the case are now in custody. The other three suspects—Sk Riyazuddin, Apu Barui, and Firdaus Sk—were arrested on Sunday. Riyazuddin previously worked as a guard at the private medical college where the survivor studies until he was fired five years ago.

Police Vow Swift Justice

"All five accused present at the scene of crime have been arrested," confirmed Sunil Chowdhury, Asansol-Durgapur police commissioner, on Monday. "We assure the family and friends of the survivor that all accused will be brought to justice quickly. We are extremely pained, and no perpetrator will be spared."

The 23-year-old second-year MBBS student was allegedly gang-raped at a forested area near the medical college campus on Friday evening. The incident occurred shortly after she and a classmate had left the campus to get dinner.
