SSB Personnel Avert Major Fire in Cardamom Plantation in West Sikkim
Yuksum, October 29 : Personnel of the 72nd Battalion of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), stationed at Yuksum in West Sikkim, successfully brought a rapidly spreading fire under control at a commercial cardamom plantation on Thursday morning, preventing extensive damage to agricultural property and potential danger to nearby residential areas.
According to a press release issued by the 72nd Battalion, the fire broke out at approximately 9:35 AM in a cardamom plantation falling under the jurisdiction of SSB Company Nambu. Upon noticing flames spreading across the plantation, Assistant Sub-Inspector (General) Pradeep Mohan Vahile, the company commander, immediately mobilised available personnel to contain the blaze.
The SSB quick-response team reached the affected area within minutes, carrying firefighting equipment and other necessary implements. Despite thick smoke and challenging terrain, the personnel worked to contain the flames by creating firebreaks and preventing the blaze from spreading to adjoining agricultural fields and nearby settlements.
The firefighting operation was conducted under the guidance of Commandant Jai Prakash of the 72nd Battalion and the operational supervision of Second-in-Command Narayan Ram Khadav. The coordinated response helped bring the situation under control before the fire could cause more extensive damage.
Local villagers and plantation owners expressed relief and appreciation for the timely intervention of SSB personnel. Their swift action helped protect the cardamom plantation, an important source of agricultural income for farmers in the region, while reducing the risk to surrounding properties.
The 72nd Battalion stated that the operation reflected the Sashastra Seema Bal's commitment to community welfare, environmental protection and public safety alongside its primary responsibility of border security.
The exact cause of the fire and the extent of damage, if any, were not specified in the official press release.
