Stray Dogs Save the Life of an Abandoned Newborn in West Bengal
Kolkata , Dec 4 : While debates continue across the country about imposing restrictions on stray dogs, a heartwarming incident from West Bengal has highlighted their compassionate side. In a remarkable act of survival and protection, a group of stray dogs saved the life of a newborn baby in Nabadwip town of Nadia district.
According to reports, a newborn was found abandoned late at night outside the bathroom of a railway colony. Soon after, a pack of stray dogs gathered around the infant and formed a silent protective circle. Though it may sound unusual, local residents said the dogs were not aggressive at all. Instead, they stood quietly around the baby, as if guarding the fragile life.
As per an media report, the newborn had been abandoned just minutes after birth. Even the blood from delivery had not been cleaned from the infant’s body. A resident of the railway colony, Shukla Mandal, who witnessed the scene, described it as chilling.
“When we woke up, what we saw was absolutely horrifying. The dogs were standing in a circle around the baby. They were not aggressive at all; they were alert. It felt as if they understood the baby was struggling between life and death,” she said.
Another local resident, Subhash Pal, shared that early in the morning they heard a baby crying and assumed a child in the neighborhood was unwell. “We never imagined that a newborn would be lying outside, guarded by dogs,” he added.
Shukla Mandal was the first to approach the baby. She carefully picked up the infant, wrapped the child in her dupatta, and called neighbors for help. The baby was first taken to Maheshganj Hospital and later referred to Krishnanagar Sadar Hospital. Doctors confirmed that the newborn is now healthy and safe.
The police were informed about the incident and have begun an investigation. Doctors stated that the baby did not suffer any injuries. Police suspect that someone from the local area may have abandoned the newborn, but the matter is still under investigation.
