Hindu Nepali women are celebrating Haritali's Teej festival on the day of Bhadra Shukla Tritiya. This festival is celebrated by married women for husband's longevity, good health and steadfast fortune while unmarried women are fasting hunger with the wish of well deserved bride.
Darshans in Shiva temples
Women dressed in red sarees, bangles and jewellery are performing worship, hymns and dance of Shiva and Parvati in the temple. Women in the temple premises are ongoing to comfort and enjoy each other by sharing their sorrows through songs.
Three days special festival
The Teej festival which started with 'date' on the day of Bhadra Shukla Dwitiya has become exhilarating with Haritalika fast. This festival concludes on the day of Rishipanchami by worshiping Ganesh Chaturthi tomorrow and Saptarishi tomorrow. According to mythology, Mata Parvati had made severe penance to find Mahadev a husband, who is believed to have helped her defeat. On this basis, this festival is called 'Haritalika' Teej.
Social importance of Teej
Along with religious beliefs, Teej's social and cultural importance is also great. It provides an opportunity to strengthen the relationship between Maiti and Cheli. Sisters who have gone to foreign home gather together in Mait and express their life's sufferings, injustice and rights through songs. This is also taken as a medium of women empowerment.
The impact and challenge of modernism
There has been some changes in Teej celebration style lately. Entertaining songs have become more popular than grief and pain songs like in the past. In addition to this, the trend of displaying unnecessary rubbish and expensive jewelry has also increased. Many have expressed concern over the perversion like celebrating 'Pre-Teej' a month ahead in the Party Palace, overcoming the originality and spiritual importance of the festival.
Anyway, despite these challenges, Haritali's Teej has become a symbol of self-esteem, religious faith and cultural identity of Nepali women. This is providing an important opportunity to share mutual harmony and happiness in the Nepali society.
