The first Indian-born cheetah, Mukhi, has delivered five cubs at Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh, marking a major milestone in India’s ongoing cheetah reintroduction project launched three years ago. Officials confirmed that the mother and cubs are healthy and being closely monitored.
Mukhi, now 33 months old, was the only surviving cub among four born to the Namibian cheetah Siyaya in March 2023. She was abandoned at birth and raised under the care of veterinarians and wildlife experts at the park. Her successful reproduction is being seen as proof that the species is adapting to Indian conditions.
Union Environment Minister congratulated the team and stated on platform X that this marks the first time in recent history that an Indian-born cheetah has reproduced, calling it a landmark moment for Project Cheetah.
In an interesting coincidence, both Mukhi and her mother Siyaya became mothers at nearly the same age. The development comes at a crucial time as Kuno National Park prepares to receive eight more cheetahs from Botswana under the ongoing conservation effort.
