Total Washout: BJP-Opposition Face-Off Ends Monsoon Session as Parliament Adjourns Sine Die

New Delhi, Aug 13 : India's Monsoon Session of Parliament came to a chaotic close on August 13, 2026, as counter-protests between the ruling BJP and the opposition INDIA bloc erupted right outside the Lok Sabha at the Makar Dwar steps, capping off a session largely paralysed by disruption.

The final-day standoff began when BJP members protested against Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, accusing the Congress party of failing to address the unrest in Jharkhand. Opposition MPs hit back almost immediately, with Congress leader Pawan Khera fronting a theatrical counter-protest featuring a toy monkey and pointed slogans aimed at the government.

While the Lok Sabha descended into noise, the Rajya Sabha managed to push through one major legislative item: the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, cleared despite opposition pushback and rejected amendments. The upper house was then adjourned sine die following closing remarks and a rendition of Vande Mataram.

Opposition leaders were unsparing in their criticism of how the session was handled. TMC's Saugata Roy placed the blame squarely on the government, saying it was the ruling side's job, not the opposition's, to run the House and win over dissenting voices. Samajwadi Party MP Rajiv Rai accused the government of waiting until the last moment to offer explanations, drawing a comparison to how protesting students were treated. Congress MP Karti Chidambaram called it a deeply disappointing session, arguing that almost nothing was discussed and that bills were pushed through without real debate, while urging the government to give the opposition genuine space to raise its concerns.

With barely any substantive legislative business conducted beyond the one bill, the Monsoon Session will likely be remembered less for its outcomes and more for the gridlock, noise, and political theatre that defined it.
