Updated 8 AM Tamilnadu : At least 39 people, including several children, were killed and more than 95 others injured in a tragic stampede at a political rally of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and actor-turned-politician Vijay in Karur, Tamil Nadu.

The incident took place on Saturday evening when an overwhelming crowd gathered to hear Vijay’s address. Eyewitnesses reported that chaos and overcrowding led to panic, with many people fainting in the heat and pressure of the crowd. The situation quickly spiraled into a deadly stampede.

Emergency services rushed the injured to nearby hospitals, where many are still undergoing treatment. Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances that triggered the tragedy.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin arrived in Karur early Sunday to meet the injured at the Government Medical College and Hospital and offer condolences to the bereaved families. Expressing profound grief over the tragedy, he announced an ex-gratia of ₹10 lakh for the families of those who lost their lives and ₹1 lakh for the injured.

The Chief Minister also ordered a judicial inquiry headed by retired Justice Aruna Jagadeesan to investigate the circumstances that led to the stampede.
