West Bengal Orders Two-Day School Closure Amid Severe Heatwave in Multiple Districts
Amid scorching heatwave conditions gripping several parts of West Bengal, the state government has issued an official directive to close all schools—government-run, aided, and sponsored—across primary, upper primary, secondary, and higher secondary levels on June 13 and 14. The order excludes schools in the hill regions, where temperatures have remained comparatively moderate.
The decision comes after multiple districts, including Purulia, Bankura, and East Midnapore, reported incidents of students falling ill due to the unbearable classroom heat. These reports prompted urgent appeals from local education bodies, including a formal letter from the West Bengal Board of Primary Education, urging state authorities to intervene.
Education Minister Bratya Basu confirmed the shutdown through an official statement, citing the need to prioritize student health and well-being during extreme weather. He instructed all education boards and councils to implement the closure effectively and ensure no academic activity takes place during the designated days.
A formal notification from the West Bengal School Education Department stated: “Considering the prevailing heat wave situation as reported from some districts, the competent authority has decided to keep teaching-learning activities suspended in all Government, Government-Aided/Sponsored, Primary, Upper Primary, Secondary, and Higher Secondary educational institutions in the state (except hill areas) on 13.06.25 and 14.06.25.”
Although monsoon rains have reached parts of North Bengal, the southern belt remains under severe heat stress, with temperatures soaring well above normal. The two-day closure brings a sense of relief to thousands of students, parents, and teachers facing the oppressive summer weather.
