Banks Strike Nationwide on January 27 as Workers Push for Five-Day Work Week
TVS Report, 27 Jan : Public sector bank employees across India are staging a nationwide strike on January 27, 2026, intensifying their demand for the immediate adoption of a five-day work week. The protest has been called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) after long-standing discussions with authorities failed to result in a formal decision.
The strike is expected to disrupt regular operations in public sector bank branches on Tuesday. Services such as cash deposits and withdrawals, cheque clearance, and in-person customer assistance are likely to be affected. Customers have been advised to complete important banking work in advance or rely on digital services such as internet banking, mobile apps, and ATMs.
Union leaders have clarified that the protest is not only about reducing working days but also about improving work-life balance and ensuring fair labour practices. At present, bank employees work six days a week, with only alternate Saturdays off. According to unions, the lack of a formal five-day work schedule has increased workload pressure and staffing challenges, particularly with rising customer demands and administrative duties.
The UFBU has pointed out that several government offices and financial institutions already operate on a Monday-to-Friday schedule, and bank employees should receive similar benefits. The Indian Banks’ Association had earlier recommended the implementation of a five-day work week to the government following agreements with unions in 2023 and 2024, but final approval is still pending.
Although the government and banking authorities have acknowledged the issue, no clear timeline has been announced for implementing the five-day work system. The strike has once again brought attention to larger concerns surrounding employee welfare, operational efficiency, and evolving work culture in India’s banking sector.
For bank customers, especially those dependent on branch-based services, the strike may cause temporary inconvenience. However, experts believe the growing reliance on digital banking platforms could help reduce the overall impact.
