Bengal Govt Withdraws Abhishek Banerjee’s Z-Plus Security Amid Major Security Review
Kolkata, May 11 : The West Bengal government, led by Suvendu Adhikari, has taken away the Z-plus security previously provided to Trinamool Congress national general secretary and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee. This marks a major change in the state’s security policy.
According to administrative sources, the decision also includes the removal of extra police deployment and special pilot car services that had been assigned to Banerjee for over a decade. Officials stated he will now receive only the standard security arrangement usually given to Members of Parliament.
The move came after a high-level security review at Nabanna, where Chief Minister Adhikari met with senior bureaucrats, district magistrates, and police officials. During the review, the government stressed that state-funded security should depend on a real assessment of threats, not on political status or influence.
Sources also said that the state administration has started to reduce security setups for several senior Trinamool Congress leaders following the recent government change. Security barricades, police presence, and surveillance systems outside key TMC-related sites in Kolkata have also been removed gradually.
This latest decision is seen as one of the strongest administrative actions taken by the new BJP-led government in West Bengal since taking office earlier this month.
