Bulldozer Drive in Siliguri Following High Court Order, Illegal Structures Demolished

Families living at the site for 20–25 years allege their homes were demolished without prior notice
Siliguri, September 15: A bulldozer demolition drive was carried out in Siliguri on Tuesday morning following directions from the High Court in connection with a long-pending land dispute. Several structures identified as illegal were demolished during the operation, creating tension in the area.

According to local sources, several families had been residing on the disputed land for around 20 to 25 years. The property had reportedly been at the centre of a prolonged legal dispute. Following the High Court's directions, the administration launched an eviction drive on Tuesday morning and demolished the structures standing on the land.

However, the affected families have expressed strong resentment over the action. They alleged that their houses were demolished without any prior notice. Some residents also claimed that they were forcibly asked to vacate their homes before the demolition.

The residents said they had been living on the land for two to two-and-a-half decades and that the demolished houses were their only shelter. They claimed that the sudden demolition has left their families in serious difficulty.

The affected families further alleged that the eviction drive was carried out without making any arrangements for their rehabilitation. They have urged the authorities to consider their long-standing residence and address the matter from a humanitarian perspective.

Meanwhile, it has been learnt that the demolition drive was carried out on the basis of the High Court's directions in the land-related case. However, details regarding the exact nature of the court's order, whether prior notices were served to the affected families, and what procedures were followed by the administration before the eviction remain unclear.

The affected residents have questioned the role of the administration and demanded a humane resolution to the issue, keeping their long-standing residence at the site in consideration.
Although the demolition drive led to tension in the area on Tuesday morning, the situation is reportedly under control.
