Siliguri Municipal Corporation Clears Encroachments Under Newly Constructed Burdwan Road Flyover
Siliguri: Encroachment beneath the newly constructed Burdwan Road flyover has been cleared by the Siliguri Municipal Corporation. For some time, several temporary shops had reportedly started coming up beneath the flyover, raising concerns over illegal occupation of government space.
Flyovers in different parts of the state are often seen becoming surrounded by unauthorised stalls and encroachments. However, authorities in Siliguri are now attempting to prevent a similar situation from developing under the newly constructed flyover.
Despite repeated appeals from the administration against occupying footpaths or government land for commercial activities, several shops had reportedly been set up beneath the Burdwan Road flyover.
On Sunday morning, the Siliguri Municipal Corporation launched an eviction drive and removed the unauthorised structures from the area.
The action, however, drew mixed reactions from local residents. While some welcomed the removal of the encroachments, others opposed the eviction, raising concerns about the livelihood of poor vendors.
Some residents questioned how these small traders would earn a living and alleged that the action was putting additional pressure on economically vulnerable people.
