Ceasefire Breached Within Hours: China’s Support for Pakistan Sparks Diplomatic Concerns
New Delhi, May 11 – The fragile ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan, established only hours earlier, was abruptly violated by Pakistan, drawing swift criticism from Indian officials and renewed tensions along the Line of Control. Simultaneously, remarks from China expressing strong support for Pakistan have drawn scrutiny, raising questions over Beijing's diplomatic posturing amid escalating hostilities.
Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar held a telephonic conversation with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to discuss the regional developments following the recent military skirmishes triggered by the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. In an official statement issued immediately afterward, Pakistan’s Foreign Office confirmed that China has pledged unwavering support for Pakistan's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Wang Yi was quoted as recognizing Pakistan's "restraint" and lauding its "responsible approach under challenging circumstances." Reaffirming the close alliance, the Chinese foreign minister reiterated that China would continue to stand by Pakistan as an “all-weather strategic cooperative partner and iron-clad friend.”
The statement has raised diplomatic concerns in India, especially given the timing—just after multiple ceasefire violations were reported by Indian forces. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi both flagged drone intrusions on the social media platform X, suggesting renewed cross-border provocations.
India's Ministry of Defence released a formal statement denouncing the violations, stating that repeated breaches had occurred since the ceasefire was agreed upon by the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMO) of both nations. The statement emphasized that the Indian armed forces are responding adequately and are under clear instructions to act firmly in the event of further violations, whether along the Line of Control or the International Border.
Additionally, Mr. Dar also spoke with Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan to brief him on the evolving situation, reflecting Islamabad’s ongoing diplomatic outreach amid rising tensions.
As the situation continues to unfold, India has urged Pakistan to approach the matter with gravity and ensure adherence to the ceasefire agreement, warning of firm retaliatory measures in the event of continued hostilities.
