Delhi CM Orders Demolition Drive After Satya Niketan Collapse

New Delhi, September 9: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to act against illegal constructions across the capital following the Satya Niketan building collapse that claimed seven lives.

Gupta ordered detailed inspections of paying guest accommodations and instructed senior municipal officials to remain on the ground during enforcement operations.

Officials have also been asked to examine building records to establish when unauthorised construction took place and which authority had jurisdiction at the time. The review is intended to identify violations and determine responsibility.

The directions follow the September 6 collapse of Hostel Daze, a building used as paying guest accommodation in Satya Niketan. The structure housed students and other residents.

According to details of the FIR reported by The Times of India, a local inquiry indicated that the building was more than 30 years old. Additional floors were allegedly constructed to increase rental income.

The incident has brought the safety of student accommodation under scrutiny, with inspections and demolition drives planned in several parts of Delhi.
