“Forgive Everyone and Go in Peace”: Emotional Farewell to Harish Rana After Landmark Court Decision
New Delhi, March 16 : A deeply emotional moment from Ghaziabad has touched hearts across India after a video surfaced showing the family of Harish Rana bidding him a final farewell. The 32-year-old man had been living in a vegetative state for more than 13 years, and his case recently became historic after the Supreme Court of India allowed the withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment.
In the short but powerful video, Rana lies quietly on his bed as his family gathers around him. His mother sits beside him, overwhelmed with emotion, while a member of the Brahma Kumaris spiritual organisation gently applies a tilak on his forehead and offers comforting words, asking him to forgive everyone and seek forgiveness before beginning his final journey. The moment captured the immense grief and acceptance within the family as they prepared to let him go.
Harish Rana’s life changed forever in 2013 when he fell from the fourth floor of his accommodation while studying engineering, suffering severe brain injuries that left him in a permanent vegetative state. Despite years of medical care and hope for recovery, doctors eventually concluded that the chances of improvement were extremely unlikely.
After a long legal battle and medical evaluation by expert boards, the Supreme Court permitted the withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment. The decision is widely regarded as one of the first practical implementations of India’s passive euthanasia framework, reinforcing the idea of a patient’s right to die with dignity.
Before he was taken to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi, relatives and close spiritual companions spent a few final moments with him at home. For the family, the farewell marked the end of a long and painful chapter filled with hope, prayer and emotional strength.
The heartbreaking video has since sparked conversations across the country about end-of-life care, compassion in medical decisions, and the difficult choices families sometimes face when recovery is no longer possible.
