IMD Warns of Extremely Heavy Rainfall Across Sikkim and Northeast, Flash Flood and Landslide Risk Increases
Gangtok, Aug 4 : The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in Sikkim and several northeastern states on Tuesday. This raises concerns about possible flash floods, landslides, and disruptions to daily life.
The IMD reported that Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, and the Sub-Himalayan districts of West Bengal can expect heavy to very heavy rainfall. Some areas might see extremely heavy precipitation of over 20 centimeters.
The department identified parts of Sikkim and the West Bengal districts of Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, and Cooch Behar as having a moderate to high risk of flash floods. Residents in these areas should stay alert and follow guidance from local authorities.
Moreover, isolated regions of Arunachal Pradesh are likely to experience very heavy rainfall. Bihar, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are also expected to receive heavy rainfall. The current intense rainfall in Assam and Meghalaya is likely to continue until Wednesday.
Officials have advised people living in areas prone to landslides and those in low-lying regions to take precautions. They recommend avoiding non-essential travel during heavy rainfall and staying updated with official weather reports. The ongoing downpour may lead to waterlogging, flash floods, landslides, and temporary disruptions to road connections in several affected areas.
