India’s Driving Licence Rules 2026
India’s Driving Licence Rules 2026
TVS Report, 7 Jan : No More RTO Driving Tests? Big Changes for Indias Driving Licence Rules in 2026 – Check Details Here!
In a landmark move to modernize road safety and streamline bureaucracy, the Central Government has introduced transformative rules for obtaining a driving licence in 2026. The most significant highlight of this reform is the elimination of the mandatory driving test at the Regional Transport Office (RTO), providing massive relief to millions of applicants across the country.
The End of RTO Queues
Under the new guidelines issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, citizens are no longer required to stand in long queues or wait for weeks to secure a testing slot at the RTO. Instead, the government has empowered recognized private driving training institutes to conduct assessments.
How to Get Your Licence in 2026
The process has been simplified into a structured training-based model:
Enrollment: Applicants must register at a government-recognized driving school.
Training: Complete a rigorous 29-hour course over a span of four weeks.
Certification: Once the training is complete and the applicant passes the schools internal assessment, they will receive a formal certificate.
Issuance: This certificate will serve as valid proof of competency, allowing the RTO to issue the driving licence without a secondary physical test.
Strict Standards for Training Institutes
To ensure road safety is not compromised, the government has set high bars for these training centers:
Infrastructure: Schools for light motor vehicles (LMVs) must have at least one acre of land, while heavy vehicle training centers require a minimum of two acres.
Expert Trainers: Trainers must be at least 12th-grade graduates with a minimum of five years of driving experience and deep knowledge of traffic regulations.
Curriculum: The 29-hour course is divided into 21 hours of practical driving (covering uphill, downhill, parking, and city/rural driving) and 8 hours of theory (covering first aid, fuel efficiency, and accident prevention).
This reform is expected to reduce corruption, improve the quality of drivers on Indian roads, and make the licensing process more user-friendly than ever before.
