Indian Air Force Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla is poised to etch his name in history today as the inaugural Indian national to reach the International Space Station (ISS). Shukla, alongside three international crewmates from the U.S., Poland, and Hungary, is anticipated to dock at the orbital outpost at 7 a.m. EDT (4:30 p.m. IST).
Having launched from Launch Complex 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida aboard a new SpaceX Dragon spacecraft on a Falcon 9 rocket at 2:31 a.m. EDT (12 noon IST), the Lucknow-born astronaut is making an extraordinary journey. NASA confirmed the successful launch, stating, "The SpaceX Dragon spacecraft carrying four Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4) crew members is orbiting Earth and on its way to the International Space Station after launching from Kennedy Space Center." The Dragon is expected to dock with the Harmony module's space-facing port.
This mission marks a significant milestone, bringing an Indian astronaut to space after 41 years, making Shukla only the second Indian to achieve this feat, following Rakesh Sharma's flight in 1984. En route to the ISS, Shukla shared his excitement: "Namaskar, my dear countrymen! What a ride! We are back in space once again after 41 years. It's an amazing ride. We are revolving around the Earth at a speed of 7.5 kilometers per second." He emphasized the collective nature of his journey, stating, "This is not my journey alone, but I am carrying the Indian flag with me, and this is the journey of India's human space flight." Notably, he has brought traditional Indian sweets like carrot halwa, moong dal halwa, and mango nectar to enjoy in space.
The Axiom-4 Mission transcends a mere scientific accomplishment, symbolizing India's escalating prominence as a global leader in technology. It underscores the nation's capacity for pioneering space innovation, fostering sustainability, and meaningfully contributing to international space endeavors. Once aboard the ISS, Shukla will engage in groundbreaking experiments centered on food and space nutrition. These experiments, a collaborative effort between ISRO, the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), and NASA's support, aim to deepen understanding of vital sustainable life-support systems, crucial for future long-duration space expeditions. The research will also investigate the impact of microgravity and space radiation on edible microalgae, a nutrient-dense and promising food source for future missions. This includes evaluating key growth parameters and analyzing transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic alterations in various algal species in space compared to their terrestrial counterparts.
