ISRO Launches NVS-03 Satellite to Strengthen India's Indigenous GPS System NavIC
Sriharikota, October 31 : The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) launched the NVS-03 navigation satellite aboard its GSLV-F18 rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota at 11:51 PM on October 30, marking another major step towards strengthening India's indigenous satellite navigation system, NavIC.
The 2,232-kg NVS-03 satellite is part of India's second-generation navigation satellite series, designed to improve positioning accuracy, reliability and timing services. Equipped with an indigenous atomic clock and L1, L5 and S-band navigation signals, the satellite aims to enhance compatibility with smartphones and other navigation devices.
NavIC provides independent satellite navigation services across India and approximately 1,500 kilometres beyond its borders. The system supports transportation, maritime operations, disaster management, telecommunications and defence applications, reducing India's dependence on foreign navigation systems such as GPS.
The launch marks the 20th flight of India's GSLV programme. The satellite's operational readiness will depend on successful orbital manoeuvres and technical checks.
