Justice Delivered: Seattle Agrees to Monumental Rs 262 Crore Settlement for Family of Indian Student Jaahnavi Kandula
New Delhi , 12 Feb : In a significant development bringing some measure of closure to a case that sparked global outrage, the City of Seattle has reached a settlement agreement of $29 million (approximately Rs 262 crore) with the family of Jaahnavi Kandula. The 23-year-old Indian graduate student was tragically struck and killed by a speeding police patrol vehicle in January 2023.
The settlement resolves a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the Kandula family, who had originally sought damages amounting to $110 million. The agreement was confirmed by attorneys representing the family and city officials, marking the end of a painful legal battle over the loss of a promising young life.
Jaahnavi Kandula, a master’s student at Northeastern University’s Seattle campus, was crossing a street on January 23, 2023, when she was hit by a police cruiser driven by Officer Kevin Dave. Investigations revealed that Officer Dave was driving at a staggering 74 mph in a 25 mph zone while responding to a drug overdose call.
The tragedy was compounded by a subsequent controversy that drew international condemnation. Body camera footage released later captured another officer, Daniel Auderer, laughing about the fatal collision and making insensitive remarks, suggesting that Kandula’s life had "limited value" and that the city should "just write a check." These comments ignited fierce protests and demands for accountability from the Indian community and government officials alike.
While Officer Kevin Dave faced a $5,000 traffic fine and was not criminally charged, Daniel Auderer was terminated from the Seattle Police Department for his unprofessional conduct, which officials stated had deeply damaged public trust.
Seattle City Attorney Erika Evans expressed that while no amount of money can replace a life, the city hopes this settlement provides some relief to Jaahnavi’s grieving family. The funds for the settlement will reportedly be covered largely by the city's insurance policies.
This historic settlement stands as a reminder of the need for police accountability and the value of every human life, echoing the sentiments of millions who stood in solidarity with Jaahnavi Kandula.
