Kerala Orders Fresh Vigilance Probe Against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in 20-Year-Old Corruption Case
Thiruvananthapuram, October 4: Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala has ordered a fresh Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) inquiry into allegations involving India's Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, reopening a controversial case dating back to 2006, when Kumar served as the state's Public Works Department (PWD) Secretary.
The investigation concerns alleged irregularities in the Kerala State Transport Project (KSTP) and the death by suicide of Malaysian civil engineer Lee See Been, who was associated with the PATI-BEL consortium undertaking the MC Road upgrade. His reported suicide note allegedly mentioned Kumar's name.
The fresh inquiry follows a complaint by Congress leader Malayinkeezhu Venugopal, who alleged that the original 2006 investigation was prematurely stalled due to political and external influence.
The Home Department has sought records of the earlier investigation, while the Vigilance Director has been instructed to examine the allegations and recommend appropriate legal action based on the findings.
The allegations remain subject to investigation, and no finding of wrongdoing against Kumar has been established through the newly ordered inquiry.
