A 20-year-old woman in Kolkata was allegedly gang-raped by two acquaintances on her birthday. The incident occurred on Friday in the Regent Park area. The two men, identified as Chandan Malik and Deep, are currently at large. Deep is reportedly a government employee.
According to police, the survivor, who is from Haridevpur, claims that one of the accused, Chandan, took her to Deep's apartment under the pretense of celebrating her birthday. After they had a meal, the woman wanted to go home, but the men allegedly locked the door and assaulted her.
The woman managed to escape the apartment at around 10:30 am on Saturday. She then went home and told her family what had happened. A First Information Report (FIR) was filed with the police later that day. Authorities are now searching for the two men.
In her complaint, the woman stated that she met Chandan several months ago. He had introduced himself as the head of a Durga Puja committee in south Kolkata. He later introduced her to Deep, and the three had remained in contact. The two men had also promised to involve her in the puja committee.
The incident is part of a series of crimes against women in the city, which is considered to be one of the safest for women in the country according to recent National Crime Records Bureau data.
A senior officer of Kolkata Police said, "The woman's birthday was on Friday, September 5. On that occasion, the accused Chandan and Deep took the victim to a flat in the Regent's Park area in south Kolkata. There, they had a meal. It is alleged that when the girl wanted to return home, the accused stopped her. Then, it is alleged that they locked the door and gang-raped her. After the torture, the woman somehow managed to leave the flat and return home."
"A complaint was lodged, and an FIR has been registered accordingly. We have started a search for the accused," the police officer said.
