Maharashtra Woman Doctor Suicide Case : Sub-Inspector and Software Engineer Arrested
Satara (MH), Oct 26 : In a big development that has shaken Maharashtra’s medical and police fraternity, two men — a police sub-inspector and a software engineer — have been arrested in connection with the alleged suicide of a woman government doctor from Satara district. The case has triggered widespread outrage, exposing a grim tale of harassment, abuse of power, and institutional apathy.
On Saturday evening, Police Sub-Inspector (PSI) Gopal Badane surrendered at the Phaltan Rural Police Station, just hours after his co-accused, software engineer Prashant Bankar, was nabbed by a police team from Pune. According to Satara Superintendent of Police Tushar Doshi, both accused were named in a distressing suicide note that the deceased had written on her palm.
Bankar, alleged to have mentally harassed the victim, was presented before a Satara court and remanded to four days of police custody. A case of rape and abetment of suicide has been registered against both men.
The young doctor, originally from Beed district in the Marathwada region, was serving at a government hospital in Phaltan, Satara. She was found hanging in a local hotel room late Thursday night. Her handwritten note accused PSI Badane of repeatedly raping her and held Bankar responsible for mental harassment.
According to investigators, Bankar was the son of her landlord and had maintained communication with the victim shortly before her death. Following the revelations, PSI Badane was immediately suspended from service pending investigation.
The victim was cremated at her ancestral village in Wadwani, Beed, on Friday night, amid heart-wrenching scenes. Her family has demanded capital punishment for both accused, alleging that their repeated pleas for help were ignored by authorities.
“She complained many times about the harassment, but no one listened,” said one of her relatives to a local TV channel. Another relative claimed that the doctor faced pressure from political figures to alter post-mortem reports during her tenure at the hospital.
“Local leaders would often compel her to manipulate autopsy reports. She even reported such coercion by the PSI, but no action was taken,” the relative added.
BJP MLA Suresh Dhas has now demanded that a Member of Parliament allegedly involved in pressuring the doctor be investigated and booked. While he refrained from naming the MP, his statement has intensified political tension in the region.
Documents have also surfaced indicating that earlier this year, the victim had informed district authorities that certain police officials were threatening her and ridiculing her background from Beed district.
Her cousins, both doctors themselves, alleged that she was deliberately assigned frequent post-mortem duties to harass her. Despite the strain, she was preparing for her Doctor of Medicine (MD) entrance exam, aspiring to specialize further in medicine or ENT.
Her uncle shared that the family was still repaying a ₹3 lakh education loan from her MBBS studies. “Her father is a farmer with little education. She was determined to pursue higher studies and serve with dignity, but the system failed her,” he said emotionally.
As the investigation deepens, the tragic case has sparked a wider debate on women’s safety within government institutions, the misuse of authority by law enforcement, and the urgent need for structural accountability in workplace harassment complaints.
Maharashtra now watches closely, as justice for the young doctor becomes a symbol of a larger fight — one against silence, abuse, and impunity.
