Malaysia Cracks Down on Social Media: Under-16s Barred from Opening TikTok, Instagram and Facebook Accounts

Kuala Lumpur, June 1: Malaysia has introduced sweeping new online safety regulations that prohibit children under the age of 16 from creating social media accounts, placing the country among a growing number of nations tightening digital protections for minors.

The new rules apply to major platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube. Social media companies operating in Malaysia will now be required to implement age-verification systems to prevent underage users from registering on their platforms.

Authorities say the move is aimed at shielding children from harmful online content, cyberbullying, internet addiction and other digital risks. The government has clarified that the objective is not to deny young people access to technology, but to ensure safer and age-appropriate use of online platforms.

Under the regulations, existing users may also be required to verify their age over the coming months. Companies that fail to comply with the new requirements could face substantial financial penalties.

While many parents have welcomed the decision as a step toward improving child safety online, critics and digital rights advocates have raised concerns over privacy, surveillance and the effectiveness of blanket restrictions.

Malaysia's decision reflects a broader global trend, with several countries exploring or implementing age-based restrictions on social media access amid growing concerns about the impact of digital platforms on children's mental health and wellbeing.
