Mountaineering Legend Nirmal Purja Dies in Broad Peak Avalanche
Renowned Nepali mountaineer Nirmal “Nimsdai” Purja has died after an avalanche struck Broad Peak in Pakistan, his expedition company confirmed.
The avalanche hit the 8,047-metre mountain, the world’s 12th-highest peak, on July 30 while an international expedition team was ascending. Purja and several other members of the expedition lost their lives in the tragedy.
Purja was widely known for his record-breaking mountaineering achievements, including climbing all 14 of the world’s 8,000-metre peaks in just six months in 2019.
