Pakistan Appeals to India Over Indus Waters Treaty Suspension
Pakistan has formally appealed to India to reconsider its April 23, 2025, decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT). The appeal, sent by Pakistan’s Ministry of Water Resources, stresses the treaty’s importance to millions who rely on the Indus river system.
India suspended the treaty following a terrorist attack in Jammu & Kashmir that killed 26 civilians, blaming Pakistan-based groups. In response, Pakistan urged India to uphold the agreement, warning that disruption of water flows could escalate tensions.
The IWT, signed in 1960 with World Bank facilitation, has survived decades of conflict and is seen as vital for regional stability.
