Parliament Passes Bill Granting Vande Mataram Same Legal Protection as National Anthem
New Delhi, July 30: Parliament passed the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026, on Thursday. Both the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha approved it. This legislation aims to give the national song Vande Mataram the same legal protection as the National Flag and the National Anthem.
The Bill makes it a crime to intentionally insult, obstruct, or disrupt the singing of Vande Mataram. Individuals found guilty could face up to three years in prison, a fine, or both, according to the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act.
The Rajya Sabha approved the Bill on July 29, and the Lok Sabha cleared it on July 30. During the debate, the government stated that the amendment recognizes the historical and national importance of Vande Mataram. It aims to ensure that it receives legal protection like other national symbols.
After passing in both Houses of Parliament, the Bill will be sent to the President for approval. It will become law after receiving the President's assent.
