President Murmu Clears VB–G RAM G Act 2025, Ushering in New Era of Rural Employment
New Delhi, Dec 21 : President Droupadi Murmu has granted her assent to the Viksit Bharat—Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) (VB–G RAM G) Act, 2025, following its passage by Parliament earlier this week, according to an official statement from the Ministry of Rural Development on Sunday.
The newly enacted law raises the statutory assurance of wage-based employment for rural households to 125 days in a financial year. It focuses on strengthening livelihood security while encouraging empowerment, inclusive growth, convergence of development schemes, and saturation-based delivery of essential services. The Act aims to lay a stronger foundation for a prosperous, resilient, and self-reliant rural India.
Replacing the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), 2005, the VB–G RAM G Act represents a significant overhaul of the country’s rural employment framework. The updated statutory mechanism seeks to modernize rural development policies and align them with the long-term national goal of achieving the Viksit Bharat vision by 2047.
What is VB-G Ram G Bill?
The VB–G RAM G Bill seeks to replace the UPA-era MGNREGA, or the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, which initially guaranteed at least 100 days of employment.
States were permitted to provide up to 50 additional days of work beyond the guaranteed 100 days.
The NDA government had also extended wage employment to 150 days for Scheduled Tribe communities living in forest areas.
Under the new legislation, there will be a statutory guarantee of 125 days of wage employment, according to a government statement.
The Centre has said the intent of the bill is to ensure that public funds are spent efficiently, with greater transparency and accountability.
