North Korean Hackers Behind Record $6.3 Billion Binance Crypto Heist
New Delhi, Oct 31 : Hackers linked to North Korea have been blamed for the biggest crypto theft in history after a cyberattack on Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange. At least $6.3 billion was stolen from the exchange's wallets, though about half of that amount was frozen as the funds moved across different blockchains. Figures may still change as the investigation continues.
Binance said its initial findings show the attackers broke in through a compromised engineer's laptop. This gave them access to a service container, from which they submitted unauthorized withdrawal transactions. The company says it has found no evidence that its private keys were leaked.
Binance has suspended all deposits and withdrawals while the probe continues. It maintains that user funds are safe and has promised to publish an updated proof of reserves once remediation is complete. Former chief Changpeng Zhao said he expects all user funds to be fully covered, and the company has said it will cover all losses.
Blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs blamed a North Korean hacking cell known as TraderTraitor, which focuses almost entirely on stealing crypto from large exchanges. It says the theft took only about 20 minutes. Elliptic also attributed the attack to North Korea, noting that some stolen funds ended up in a wallet used in an earlier attack on the Bitget exchange this year. The same group was linked to the $1.4 billion Bybit theft in 2025, now the second-largest on record.
Researchers say North Korea steals crypto to fund its sanctioned weapons programmes. Binance now faces tough questions over how a single employee's laptop could reach systems controlling billions of dollars.
