PUBLIC CONCERN | Taxi Driver Alleges Assault During Emergency Medicine Stop in Chandmari
A Gangtok taxi driver has alleged that he was verbally abused and slapped by a man after stopping near a roadside pharmacy in Chandmari to obtain medicine for a tourist.
According to the driver, a passenger was experiencing an asthma attack, while an accompanying tourist consulted a doctor over the phone about medication. He said the late-night stop was necessary to seek urgent medical help.
The driver alleged that the man demanded he move his taxi and assaulted him during the incident. He shared a video and photographs in support of his account; these have not been independently verified.
The Voice Of Sikkim has communicated the matter to Sadar Police Station and forwarded it to the SHO. We have also advised the driver to approach the police and submit a formal complaint.
Parking concerns must be addressed peacefully. Anyone seeking urgent medical assistance deserves compassion, and drivers deserve dignity and respect.
We urge the police to examine the allegations and establish the facts. The other party’s account and any police findings are awaited.
