Spiritual Leader Dalai Lama has once again asserted his authority over the selection of his successor, explicitly rejecting any interference from China.

This declaration reinforces that the 600-year-old institution will continue to independently choose its future spiritual leader, effectively shutting out Beijing from the process of appointing the 15th Dalai Lama.

Succession Authority Firmly with Gaden Phodrang Trust

In a formal statement issued on Wednesday, the 14th Dalai Lama confirmed that the Gaden Phodrang Trust, his official office, holds the exclusive right to recognize his next reincarnation. He reiterated that the established process for identifying a future Dalai Lama, outlined in a September 24, 2011, statement, grants this responsibility solely to the Trust.

The spiritual leader emphasized that the Trust's members will consult with the leaders of various Tibetan Buddhist traditions and trusted Dharma Protectors, who are intrinsically linked to the Dalai Lama's lineage. They are tasked with executing the search and recognition procedures in adherence to historical tradition. The Dalai Lama's statement unequivocally declares the Gaden Phodrang Trust as the sole authority in this matter, leaving no room for external intervention.

Message to Beijing Ahead of 90th Birthday

This significant announcement, made just days before the Dalai Lama's 90th birthday on July 6, carries profound implications for his vast global following of Buddhist adherents. It also serves as a clear message to the Chinese government, which has historically attempted to control Tibetan religious practices as a means to solidify its dominion over the region.

The Dalai Lama has lived in exile in India since 1959, following a thwarted uprising against Chinese rule in Lhasa. Despite being labeled a separatist by China, he remains a global symbol of non-violence, compassion, and the enduring Tibetan fight to maintain their unique identity.
